GOP Hinders Attempt to Stop Harassment of Jews
It is absolutely shameful, but GOP demagogues are now accusing congressmen who want to stop harassment of Jews at the Air Force Academy of being anti-religious. It is clear that many leaders in the GOP believe that forced proselytizing is okay. They seem to think it is fine that Air Force cadets are called "filthy Jew" and made to take what are called "heathen walks" back to the barracks if they refuse to participate in group prayer to a fundamentalist God.

Protestant Group OKs Divestment From Israel
With the decision, approved in a 431-62 vote at the 216th annual General Assembly of Presbyterian Church (USA), the church, boasting nearly 3 million members, is believed to be the largest organization or institution to join the fledgling divestment campaign against Israel. It is the first Christian denomination to do so, according to Sister Patricia Wolfe, executive director of the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility, coalition of 275 Christian denominations.

Faith
leaders back archbishop with attack on extremism
Muslim religious leaders have joined Christian and Jewish leaders
for the first time in issuing a joint plea for tolerance for gay
people. In an open letter written in support of Rowan Williams,
the Archbishop of Canterbury, the group, which includes two bishops,
has criticised incitement to religious hatred and aggressive proselytisation
as practised by some fundamentalist evangelical Christians. The
joint letter, issued today to coincide with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish
new year, calls on believers of all religions to unite in opposition
to extremism.

Israel's
9/11 connection?
60 Israelis on Tourist Visas Detained Since Sept. 11, but it was
the subhead that really got my attention: "Government Calls
Several Cases 'of Special Interest,' Meaning Related to Post-Attacks
Investigation." ... "As long as Israeli citizens are being
held v under conditions of great secrecy v in connection with the
9/11 investigation, it is no longer tenable to dismiss the possibility
of an Israeli angle in this story."
Mythical
Garden of Eden now a wasteland
It is believed to be the Garden of Eden, the mythic place where
the Tigris and Euphrates rivers join, the cradle of mankind where
Adam came to pray to God. Today it is a desolate wasteland of excrement,
cracked paving stones and bullet holes. The eucalyptus known as
Adam's tree, a place of holy pilgrimage for Christians, Muslims
and Jews alike, stands bleached and dead.
Was
Einstein Right?
Einstein is one of my favorite twentieth-century characters. He
was remarkable, and I don't mean only for his profound contributions
to our understanding of the physical world. He was someone who drove
authoritarians like J. Edgar Hoover mad.

Calls for Peace Through New Telephone Service
The Parents¹ Circle and Bereaved Families¹
Forum of Israel announced today that its Hello Peace project, which
lets ordinary Israelis and Palestinians talk by telephone with each
other about their future, showed a dramatic surge in the volume
of phone calls during January, the month leading into the Israeli
elections. While 50,000 calls were placed during the project¹s
first three months (October through December 2002), over 46,000
new calls were made during the month of January alone and the numbers
continue to rise.
Israel
reportedly helping with U.S. war preparation
Israel is secretly playing a key role in U.S. preparations for possible
war with Iraq, helping to train soldiers and Marines for urban warfare,
conducting clandestine surveillance missions in the western Iraqi
desert and allowing the United States to place combat supplies in
Israel, according to U.S. Defense and intelligence officials.
Progressive
Rabbi Banned From Speaking at Peace Rally Because of His Pro-Israel
Stance
Rabbi
Michael Lerner can not speak at the peace rally in San Francisco,
February 16th.
The reason: Lerner had been critical of the way that A.N.S.W.E.R.
has used the anti-war demonsrtations to put forward anti-Israel
propaganda.
U.S.
Economic Aid Found to Subsidize More than Half of Israeli Settlements
Costs
The Israeli government spent well over US$533 million in sustaining
Jewish settlements in the occupied territories in 2001, more than
half the amount provided it by the United States as direct economic
assistance during the same year
Weapons

Arriving on the scene, unshaven, he was shocked to find that his
brand-new, $23,000 paper-cutting machine, ordered a month ago (from
Israel, where else?) and installed only two days before the shelling,
had been completely destroyed when the door was blown in. The printing
press was ruined, too. He climbed over fragments of furniture and
window frames and rolls of paper and pamphlets) some in Hebrew (to
reach the shaky narrow iron stairs to the gallery he built to house

Meet

The members of the Christian Coalition of America are some of the

Why
Sharon wants war
Gas masks and smallpox vaccinations are being dispensed, strategies
for evacuation discussed: Israel is preparing for war with Iraq.
This is a war which, as former UN weapons inspectors and others
have warned, could be a disaster for Israel. Paradoxically, the
Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, is all for it.

Glossary

Language is a powerful yet deceptive thing. It can be used to convey
someone's plight and it can also be used to hide unpalatable sordid
deeds. Nowhere are words adulterated more for political ends than
in Israel and Palestine today.

A

Vanderbilt University wants a few good men -- preferably Jewish

A majority of Israeli citizens oppose military occupation of Palistine.
The refusenik community, and its Israeli support, has grown dramatically

Why
I Refuse to Fight for Sharon's Settlements
My parents instilled in me the notion that I must do everything
for the state. In Israel, serving in the army is a central expression
of that ethos. When I was a high school student, it was not only
obvious to me that I would go to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF),
but it was also vital that I become a paratrooper and serve in a
special unit. It was also clear to me that my service to the state
and my patriotism would require that I participate in an officer's
course and serve an extra year.

The governments marketing this war on terror would like us to believe
that it is particularly pure and just. Of course this type of sales
pitch has been tried a couple of times before, and the world is
still waiting for a pure and just war. What Gandhi said is more
credible: I object to violence because when it appears to
do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.
Alas, in the Year of the Monkey, the words of George
W. Bush receive far more notice than those of Mohandas K. Gandhi,
or of Albert Einstein, who wrote: Peace cannot be kept by
force. It can only be achieved through understanding."

us on "the right of return"? Please let me know if and
when you'd want to write something or when in the next week you'd
be available for a phone call (give my your phone number, please).
Anti-Semitism
Is Deepening Among Muslims
Stay in a five-star hotel anywhere from Jordan to Iran, and you
can buy the infamous forgery "Protocols of the Elders of Zion."
Pick up a newspaper in any part of the Arab world and you regularly
see a swastika superimposed on the Israeil flag.
The
moral simplifier
Bush is ill-suited for a peacekeeping role in the Middle East. The
Israelis and the Palestinians are not condemned to some eternal
hell where they have to kill each other forever. There is no military
solution, but there is a political solution -- and they will get
there. The United States is obliged to broker the deal because there's
no one else to do it.
Israel,
Palestine and Justice
When Israelis and Palestinians demonize each other, it is the people
who suffer. Both sides need to accept responsibility and find a
non-violent path to a just peace.
This
will be the week when we see who runs the US-Israeli alliance
Suddenly Israel doesn't want to take our advice. Ex-general Ariel
Sharon prefers to go on wrecking the Palestinian Authority, tearing
up the Oslo agreement in the name of his Holy War on terror. Why
should he worry about the scandalous number of civilian casualties
among the Palestinians? After all, didn't America wreak its own
revenge killing thousands of innocent civilians in one of
the poorest countries on Earth
