ARISE
ALL WOMEN!
Julia
Ward Howe, the founder of Mother's Day wrote in 1870:
Arise
then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts,
whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say
firmly, "We will not have great questions decided
by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to
us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that
we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and
patience. We women of one country will be too tender
of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained
to injure theirs." From the bosom of the devastated
earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm!
Disarm!"

What can parents do?
Beware
the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip
the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism
is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the
blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums
of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils
with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have
no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather,
the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism,
will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and
gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done.
And I am Caesar. ~Attributed
to Julius Caesar
