RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT
OF
ANTI-BIAS CRIME LAWS

WHEREAS,	the City of Traverse City recognizes the importance of laws that address crimes which are specifically motivated by hate and bias; and
WHEREAS,	the City identifies with the values instilled by such laws - - values which add security and continuity to the enjoyment of our City's beauty and quality of life; and
WHEREAS,	the continuity of such beauty and quality of life is dependent upon the strict accountability of individuals who commit criminal acts specifically motivated by hate and bias; and
WHEREAS,	in recognizing the desire to champion the culture and beauty of the area, we need to also embrace an environment which is tolerant of diversity but intolerant of crimes which detract from the appreciation of diversity; and
WHEREAS,	the City encourages the Michigan Legislature to pass House Bill 4412, which would amend the State Ethnic Intimidation Act of 1988 to include the term "sexual orientation" as a criterion to be included under the Act; and
WHEREAS,	the City supports the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act, a federal act which would extend the basic hate crime protections to all Americans by adding real or perceived sexual orientation, gender and disability as categories which are addressed; therefore, be it further
RESOLVED,	that the City of Traverse City hereby supports and encourages all efforts that assist in the passing of laws which will only ensure that all citizens of our City, State, and Country are protected from crimes motivated by hate and bias; and furthermore, the passage of these laws will assist in the development of cultural harmony in the area and will make all feel proud and secure to live in our City.
