Dear Friends,

If you have old books, comics, magazines, coloring books whatever... please don't discard them.

I'm helping to revive a public children's library in Lambunao, Iloilo, Philippines. We badly need to update the reading materials which, in the last inspection, had resources dated 1945.

Lambunao is situated in a plateau and some areas are just difficult to reach. By the side, we will be starting a literacy program for mothers and their children. But mothers mostly, to give them a voice and participate in decision making within their household. Oh! Most importantly, we want to open their eyes to choices. There are other choices in this world than just making babies.

In case you have reading materials you want to send us, you may use these addresses:

MA. LEAH L. LETRERO
NEDA Regional Office VI
Fort San Pedro
Iloilo City 5000
Philippines

or

ATTY. MAGDALENA LOMETILLO
c/o Office of the Mayor
Municipal Hall
Lambunao, Iloilo 5042
Philippines

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or need more information. All the best and thank you. Leah

Update: 22-Mar-2008

We are now trying to concentrate on elementary library. The importance of cultivating young minds! I went to visit the elementary school 4 days ago...and well, the need is even greater. No interactive or learning center. They have all the videos and CDs and yet no computers or players or TVs to view them. Just so many things. I took pictures because I want to show it to an architect friend of mind to see what she can do. I would want the ceiling to have planets on it so they can close the window to darken the place and the kids can lie down (sleep if they want) and view the ceiling with stars and galaxys. I'm trying to assess the catchment of the library because based on what the librarian told me, the teachers sometimes work on Saturday and even go to the hinterlands to reach kids in far flung areas, bringing along some of the materials and provide lessons under the trees.
