Windfire Group Forming in Charlevoix

Being 15 can be hard enough. What if you’re 15 and think you might be gay? Young people describe being afraid that they are the only one, that no one could possible understand them, that no one will accept them. For over 10 years, Third Level, through its Windfire group, has offered peer support to young people in the Traverse City area who are exploring their sexuality. Some of these youth are in the process of coming out to family and friends, some have already come out and are working to establish friends and relationships, others are just checking out their feelings for the first time and figuring out what’s right for them. In some cases, Windfire is the first time they’ve met other GLBT (gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgendered) youth. In many cases, it’s the first time they talked with anyone openly about sexual feelings and other life issues.

If you are a high school-aged youth living in Northwest Michigan (or you know someone who is), you can find support in a new Windfire group that has started in Charlevoix. The group, which is totally anonymous and confidential, is on Monday evenings from 7 – 8 pm. If transportation is an issue, don’t let that stop you – we may be able to work something out for you. Call Third Level for more information and the meeting location.

If you live in Traverse City and are between 14 and 24, Windfire Traverse City meets at Third Level on Monday evenings at 6 pm. We’re working hard to re-energize the group after a number of long-standing members “graduated”. We have a new facilitator and lots of new ideas to keep the group interesting. At Windfire, you’ll find a safe place to make new friends and explore issues that are important to you.

Facilitators Needed!

Third Level is committed to assuring that Windfire is a safe and positive experience for the youth who participate. If you are an adult who can be a positive role model and mentor to youth, we would like you to consider becoming a Windfire facilitator. We are looking for additional facilitators for both the Traverse City and Charlevoix groups. To learn more, contact Annette Marquis at Third Level.

You can reach Third Level 24/7 at 800-442-7315 or visit www.thirdlevel.org and click Windfire for more information about Windfire.
