ACTION:
Call your congressional
representatives and urge them to co-sponsor, support and pass the
Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (S. 625, H.R. 1343).
ACTION PLAN:
While the September
11 terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon have pulled
most Americans together, it is unfortunate that hundreds of bias
crimes have been reported against Arabs, Muslims and other Americans
perceived to belong to these groups. National leaders have strongly
denounced this violence and bigotry, but, sadly, our federal government
may not be able to assist state and local authorities with the prosecution
of these crimes under current law. If passed, the Local Law Enforcement
Enhancement Act would give local law enforcement authorities important
federal tools and resources to help hate crime victims and their
communities pursue justice.
Please call
Sen. Levin, Sen. Stabenow and Rep. Stupak and ask them to co-sponsor
and support the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act.

Levin

HOW CURRENT
LAW HANDCUFFS FEDERAL ACTION
Current federal
hate crimes law permits federal prosecution of hate crimes only
when the victim is engaged in a "federally protected activity,"
such as voting or serving on a jury. The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement
Act (LLEEA) would remove this restriction so that perpetrators of
attacks in homes, businesses, houses of worship or elsewhere could
be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The current
federal hate crimes law is also limited in its scope, covering victims
targeted because of their race, religion or national origin. The
LLEEA would expand federal hate crimes protection to those targeted
based on gender, disability or sexual orientation.
As we grieve
for those lost in the terrorist attacks, we stand with congressional
leaders and the president in denouncing violent acts of ethnic and
religious hatred. Previously, both the House and Senate have passed
anti-discrimination measures, but they died in conference committee.
We don't want that to happen again. Now is the time to give law
enforcement agents the tools they need to fight hate crimes. Please
call your members of Congress and ask them to strengthen federal
hate crimes law by passing the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement
Act.
